Academic Mobility


Today Abai KazNPU incorporates basic principles of the Bologna Declaration and the credit system has been implemented in all high schools of Kazakhstan. Universities actively develop joint educational programs, including through academic mobility.

Should be noted that the academic mobility divided into vertical and horizontal. Vertical academic mobility implies a complete student learning in a foreign university. Horizontal mobility allows the student to study at a foreign university for a limited period (semester, academic year). The State Program of Education stipulates that the undergraduate student must spend one or two semesters in a foreign university.

In  addition, academic mobility is divided into external and internal. Foreign or international academic mobility - is teaching students at foreign higher educational institutions, as well as the work of teachers and researchers in foreign educational or scientific institutions. Internal academic mobility - teaching students as well as teachers and researchers working in Kazakhstan`s leading institutes of higher education.

At the moment, the key criteria for the selection of applicants to participate in academic mobility is the average score of the education or the current academic performance of the student and the level of knowledge of a foreign language.

Vision of academic mobility

Academic Mobility - is moving the students or teacher-researchers on a specific academic period (including the passage of an education or work experience), usually a semester or academic year at another higher education institution (within the country or abroad) for teaching or research, with mandatory offsetting in due course development of educational programs in the form of loans in their university.

Today, the academic mobility of students is mainly provided through the exchange program Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus Mundus Partnership and others.

The program of student and faculty mobility Erasmus, since its founding in 1987, attended 1.9 million. Today it has about 30 countries worldwide. To it attracted 90% of European universities, more than 3,100 universities from 31 countries.

The second consortium scholarships Erasmus Mundus program for 2009 and 2010. Kazakhstan awarded 20 scholarships (undergraduate - 9 Masters - 5, doctorate - 3, a post doctorate - 1, Teaching - 2).

At the same time, universities are implemented more than 80 memorandums of cooperation on implementation of joint educational programs with foreign universities (UK, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, USA, Canada, Russia, etc.).

A significant contribution to the development of human capital and academic mobility was the implementation of the international scholarship of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Bolashak" giving the gifted young Kazakhs to study in the best universities of the world.

An increasing number of students who want to get a quality college education.  Overseas trained more than 20 thousand Kazakhs. About 3000 international scholarship of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Bolashak" taught in 27 countries around the world. It helps to strengthen academic and cultural internationalization of Kazakhstan undergraduate and postgraduate education, improve the quality of educational programs and research.

In Kazakhstan credit technology minimum number of credits that students must master to obtain the degree:

1) Bachelor - not less than 138 credits, of which 129 credits of theoretical training;

2) training specialists with higher professional education - not less than 170 credits, of which 161 loans theoretical training;

3) Master:

scientific and pedagogical direction - at least 47 credits, including 34 credits of theoretical training;

profile direction:

1.5 years of training - at least 36 credits, including 28 credits of theoretical training;

1 year of training - at least 24 credits, including 18 credits of theoretical training;

4) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of the profile - at least 60 credits, including 30 credits of theoretical training.

Laboriousness a Kazakh loan theoretical learning with the classroom training and self-study student in the Bachelor of 45 hours of work in the profile master - 60 hours, in research and teaching master - 75 hours a doctorate - 105 hours.

To provide academic mobility of students and recognition of educational programs (all levels and forms of higher education and post-graduate) in the European educational space necessary to recalculate Kazakhstan loans loans ECTS.


The purpose of academic mobility: the integration of the international educational space, the use of the world`s educational resources.

Target indicator: in 2020 20% of students in the course of one academic period will be trained in foreign universities.


Implementation period: from 2011 to 2020.


Expected results:

By 2020, will be made ​​mandatory, reference parameters in the framework of the Bologna process on the development of academic mobility.

Will be reinforced composition of the teaching staff of universities and research institutes.

Academic mobility will contribute to:

1) Integration of Kazakhstan education in the international educational space;

2) improve the quality of knowledge and level of development of human capital;

3) The comparability and recognition of Kazakhstan`s educational programs with foreign universities;

4) Strengthening the internationalization of higher and postgraduate education.
