History of the UNESCO Chair in Pedagogy and Teacher Training at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University

Science Education and Teacher Training at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University was founded in December 1998 on the initiative of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, the UNESCO representative office in the Republic of Kazakhstan and in accordance with the UNESCO UNITWIN/UNESCO CHAIRS PROGRAMME at Abai Almaty State University.


The department was created with the aim of improving the education system, training and retraining of highly qualified teachers of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Central Asian republics.


From 1998 to the present day , the department has organized a number of educational events together with other educational institutions of Kazakhstan. Also, during the period of its functioning, the department has actively participated in many international conferences, forums, symposiums and seminars in Kazakhstan and abroad.


The UNESCO Chair participated in international educational projects:
- Erasmus+KAZDUAL project "Implementation of the dual system in Kazakhstan", with the participation of European and Kazakhstani educational and accreditation institutions;
- joint German-Kazakh project GEKAVOC;
- Project "American Councils " for 2020-2021;
- Erasmus+ project for 2021-2024;
- UNESCO scientific project implemented jointly with Okayama University for 2021-2024 "Promoting teacher education on climate change through cooperation among Asian centres of excellence in education for sustainable development" (Japan).


The department actively strengthens international ties by participating in global initiatives of UNESCO, OECD, in projects with Okayama University (Japan), UNEP, Turksoy, KERIS , etc. Work is also underway to position KazNPU as a Central Asian hub for sustainable education, memorandums have been signed, joint lectures and research are being conducted.


Special focus on Sustainable Development Goals SDG 4 (quality education), 4.7 (education for sustainable development and global citizenship), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) and SDG 13 (climate action). Institutional policies have been developed, educational courses and webinars are being implemented, and curricula are being updated.


The results include the establishment of a Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Action Research, the approval of plans to combat climate change, the development of manuals, the involvement of teachers in transformative teaching methods, and the launch of practice-oriented research and professional development.


is underway to train faculty and school teachers - webinars, open lectures, trainings, leadership in education, development of functional literacy and motivation of students. Sustainable mechanisms for integrating innovations into teaching practice are being developed using the Lesson Study method, etc.


The UNESCO Chair pays attention to climate change issues - participation in ATECCE projects, cooperation with eco-clubs, holding environmental events, opening a "Green Office", developing climate education programs and participating in conferences on sustainable development and renewable energy sources.


Seminars, trainings and scientific research
The department regularly holds round tables and educational and methodological seminars devoted to current issues of pedagogy, inclusive education, and professional training of teachers. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of higher education, modern educational technologies, and student-oriented learning.


The UNESCO Chair demonstrates strategic and effective activities, combining a scientific and practical approach, international partnership and deep integration of the SDGs into the system of training future teachers.


Prospects for the activities of the UNESCO Chair in Pedagogy and Teacher Training
1. Popularization of transformational education methods for sustainable development and strengthening the pedagogical potential of the university as a Central Asian regional hub in the field of education for sustainable development .
2. Active involvement of the faculties of KazNPU named after Abai in the development of programs and courses aimed at improving the quality of teaching based on the use of innovative technologies and the integration of practice-oriented informal research.
3. Expanding the network of cooperation with leading foreign experts in the field of education and developing transversal skills in students necessary to achieve SDG 4 and the objectives of education for the SDGs as a whole.
Main functions of the UNESCO Chair
Conducting scientific research in the field of pedagogy.
Organization of meetings with domestic and foreign specialists.
Preparation and holding of international scientific events.
Participation in international research grants.
Cooperation with universities and research centers in Kazakhstan and abroad.
Organization of trainings and seminars on pedagogical innovations.
Presentation of new scientific publications and educational programs.


Thanks to the active work of the UNESCO Department, Abai KazNPU continues to be one of the leading educational centers of Central Asia, forming the international educational agenda and contributing to the development of pedagogical education at the global level.
