The Department of General and Applied Psychology is one of the leading departments at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology of Abay KazNPU has a remarkable history of formation and development. In 1930, the Department of Psychology and Psychology was opened in KazPI, the head of which T.Tazhibayev was the first Kazakh with a degree in psychology. In 1946, under the leadership of Professor I.L. Stychinsky, the department was transformed into the Department of Psychology and became the first independent psychological unit in Kazakhstan.

All the activities of the «General and Applied Psychology» Department of the Pedagogy and Psychology Institute are permeated with civil and social responsibility, professional and scientific-pedagogical training of highly qualified personnel is at a high level according to a three-stage model:

- 6B03- Social Sciences, Bachelor`s degree;

- 7M03- Social Sciences, Master`s degree;

- 8D03- Social Sciences, preparation of Doctors of Philosophy (PhD).

In the direction of «6B031-Social Sciences» (bachelor`s degree), training is carried out according to the following educational program:

- 6B03111 - Psychology: Training of a practical psychologist

In the direction (Master`s degree) «7M031-Social Sciences» training is carried out according to two educational programs:

- 7M03116 - Psychological diagnostics and development of abilities;

- 7M03105 -Psychologist-career therapist.

In the direction of «8D031-Social Sciences»:

«8D03105 - Psychology» is aimed at training psychologists with in-depth knowledge and methodology of scientific research in psychology, able to formulate and solve modern scientific and practical problems in a competitive educational environment, successfully carry out pedagogical, research and management activities.

Currently, the department employs 4 Doctors of Psychological Sciences, professors, 8 Candidates of Sciences, 2 Candidates of Sciences, associate professors, 2 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), 18 Masters of Sciences, senior teachers. Among them: 3 Honorary workers of education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and 1 «Best university teacher».

The teaching staff of the department consists of highly qualified specialists. The Department of General and Applied Psychology is an effective educational center for psychologists. The scientific erudition of teachers, their professional integrity, outstanding ability to communicate with colleagues and students form the necessary industry and cultural environment for the development of students as competent specialists and integral personalities. Over the past 10 years, the department has trained about 1,200 highly professional practical psychologists, 100 masters of social sciences for educational organizations, healthcare, law enforcement agencies, penitentiary institutions, the army, business and other structures of society

The educational program «Social Sciences (Psychology)» is widely demanded by graduates of schools, colleges and universities. The Department of General and Applied Psychology cooperates with state institutions as a base of practices: general education schools No. 67, 19; gymnasiums No. 35, 27, 94; gymnasium schools No. 148, 62, 12; M.Dulatov Gymnasium No. 136, Lyceum School No. 33; boarding school I.Nusipbayev, Center of Neurology and rehabilitation «Aspasia»; city children`s polyclinic No. 7, «SOS Children`s Village»; Department of Internal Affairs of Almaly district; Regional command «Ontustik», National Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan, part 7552.

Students and undergraduates are provided with the opportunity to practice at the objects of professional activity:

- in educational organizations of all types and kinds;

- in sports and creative organizations;

- in healthcare organizations;

- in social services, employment centers;

- at the centers for the study of public opinion and political technologies;

- at manufacturing enterprises and business organizations;

- in law enforcement agencies, the army and penitentiary institutions.
