Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression

On June 1, 2021, an event dedicated to the memory of the victims of political repression was held at the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Institute of Philology and Multilingual Education. Freshmen under the guidance of their mentor and adviser Maira Yesenovna Tuleubayeva gathered to remember the historical facts that are associated with the tragic pages of the history of Kazakhstan and to honor the memory of the victims with a minute of silence.

Poems were recited in the Kazakh and Russian languages, slides with photographs were shown, which captured pictures of KarLag and other closed institutions, in the cold dungeons of which innocent people stayed, who became victims of mass repressions.

Head of the Department of Russian Language and Literature S.D. Abisheva noted that thanks to our ancestors, we can live in a free country. The name of the famous Kazakh scientist and translator, Professor A.L. Zhovtis, who was fired from his job in the 1960s on charges of «Kazakh nationalism» because he wanted to return to readers the work of Magzhan Zhumabayev and other banned Kazakh poets. Alexander Lazarevich Zhovtis worked for many years in our university and brought up many worthy students.

Every year holding such meetings, philology students, together with all Kazakhstanis, remember the difficult days of our history, because only memory makes it possible to boldly look into the future.
